What is Yandex? How is this Russian Search Engine different from Google?

As we all know, Yahoo and Google have been competing for the top spot on the internet for a while now. I’m sure many of us are aware of Google’s ‘Don’t Be Evil’ motto. But did you know that Yandex is a Russian based search engine with over 64 million searches per day?

The origin of Yandex

Yandex was founded in 1997 by Ilya Segalovich and Arkady Volozh. It is headquartered in Moscow, Russia. It operates from offices in Saint Petersburg, Perm, and Nizhny Novgorod. The representative offices are in Cyprus, Estonia, Switzerland, Turkey, and the United States.

Yandex is ranked #1 in Russia and #6 worldwide. It has seen a rapid increase in usage since 2007, when its usage overtook that of its main competitor, Google.com.

What makes Yandex special?

Yandex is primarily focused on providing the most relevant results to its users. And this makes them unique from other search engines like Google and Bing. Yandex has been successful in doing this for a long time.  This is only because they are constantly updating their algorithms to show the most relevant results to users.

How Yandex works?

First of all, Yandex uses ‘spiders’ to crawl websites, just as Google does. However, the spiders are called Yandexbots. The process of spidering is called ‘Ycrawling’. Secondly, Yandex has a ranking system. This is like the Google PageRank. However, the system is called the Yandex Quality Coefficient.

The Yandex Quality Coefficient ranking system ranks sites according to a system of four criteria. These include –

  • Keyword relevancy
  • Text content volume
  • The number of backlinks to a page
  • Whether a website is part of a directory

So, it’s important to ensure your website has a high quality coefficient rating. Also, you can use Yandex Webmaster Tools to improve your website’s Yandex Quality Coefficient. Yandex Webmaster Tools are similar to Google Search console (Formerly Webmasters). They help you to analyze the sites search traffic, and the amount of spidering. And they also analyze how search indexing is being carried out on the site. They help to find the most popular key phrases and keywords.

Optimizing a website in Yandex

So now you’ve got a good idea of what Yandex is. But, How can you optimise your website to get a high quality coefficient rating and a lot of traffic from Yandex? First of all, you need to ensure you have an XML site map. It also has a way to ensure that Yandexbots can crawl and read your site. And, you can do this by submitting your website to the Yandexbot. You can do this through the Yandex webmaster tools.

It’s important to remember that Yandex is not the only search engine you can optimise your website for. There are many other alternative search engines to gain traffic and improve your site’s performance.

Yandex or Google?

Yandex began with the aim of competing with Google for the top spot on the internet. Their logo is actually a picture of a Yandex, a fictional creature that is half man, half bull! So how can Yandex be used to help the webmaster optimise their site for search engines? And I’m sure you are probably thinking that Google and Yandex are completely different. However, Yandex isn’t as different as we might think…

I decided to take a look at my Google ranking for my blog and see if Yandex could tell me anything I didn’t already know. I was amazed! The results of Yandex showed some things that were different from the results of Google. But the results were still relevant to me.

An Example

The keywords that I used for my blog and for both search engines are ‘Blog article title.’ Using this search, I found 4 results from Google and 3 results from Yandex.

One interesting thing to note from this search was that both search engines gave different positions for my blog. Google ranked me at number 12 for the keyword ‘Blog article title’, and Yandex ranked me at position 25.

The actual results and order that they appear in are based on an algorithm for both search engines. Each engine uses different factors to decide which sites are most relevant for a particular search. For Google, it might be the number of times a keyword is used in a site’s description as a reason for ranking sites. For Yandex, it is more likely to be the number of times the keyword appears on the website. This makes a lot of sense. But I still think Google gets it right. The position of my site in Google, although not number one. This is much better than its position on Yandex.

I think if I were optimizing my site for search engines and using keywords in order to get higher rankings, I’d be looking at Yandex as an option. A lot of what Google wants to see in terms of SEO is how useful your website is to visitors, how many visitors you get, and how good quality your website is. Yandex is a bit more difficult to understand. But I think the more I use it, the more I’ll be able to understand what it’s looking for! I think if you know the keywords that you’re aiming to use and understand what they are, then you should be able to use Yandex to help you find those keywords and get a high ranking for your site.

How is Yandex different from Google?

Google is a multinational technology company that specializes in Internet-related services and products. Google has products such as Google Chrome, Google Drive, Google Hangouts, Google Home, Google Photos, Gmail, Google Maps, Google Docs, and more. Yandex, on the other hand, is a Russian multinational technology company that specializes in search and internet-related services. Yandex has products such as Yandex.ru, Yandex.com, Yandex.mail, Yandex music, Yandex store, Yandex news, Yandex drive, and more.

The primary difference between Google and Yandex is that Yandex has over 64 million searches per day. While Google has over 3 billion searches per day. This means that Yandex has a much larger user base. This allows them to provide more accurate and up-to-date results than Google. Additionally, Yandex also provides various tools and features. The features include news articles, photos, videos and blogs to its users. Google is available in English, while Yandex is only available in Russian. This is one more main difference between Google and Yandex. This means that Yandex is more targeted towards Russian users than Google is. It has a much more limited range of products. Additionally, Yandex also provides a translation service for its users, which allows them to browse the web in Russian.

Conclusion

Google and Yandex are both important tools for online businesses. However, their methods differ from one another. I found that both search engines are important for different reasons. Yandex is a great tool for finding relevant information. While Google is better at delivering the most up-to-date and accurate information.
